AvioBook and Braathens Regional Airlines

The Swedish airline based out of Bromma Airport came to AvioBook with a very specific request, a challenge AvioBook was proud to answer and continue supporting today.

Who are Braathens Regional Airlines?

A dynamic regional operator with very specific needs!

Braathens Regional Airlines is one of the largest national carriers in Sweden. With its headquarters based out of Bromma Airport. Since 2016, they have been providing services to over 21 destinations in Sweden, Denmark and Finland. As an airline, they operate a fleet of ATR and Airbus A320s.

What makes them unique? Their ability to close boarding such a short time before departure. Passengers are able to register just 15 minutes before the plane leaves. This ensures a better experience for those commuting around Scandinavia but creates certain time pressures on operations and the crew.

What were they looking for?

While paper operations were not that distant a memory, Braathens already had a solution for digital flight operations. What they needed, however, was a change. They were looking for a partner that was able to provide a more integrated EFB solution while giving them access to the necessary data to meet European reporting requirements and internal objectives for continual improvement.

Most importantly for the airline, they needed a partner that was stable, with robust enough integrations to ensure that the necessary flight information reliably appeared on the cockpit iPad.

What did the project involve?

The project was started in 2022 and covered AvioBook Flight Briefing, OFP and Weight & Balance module. Below, the project managers Pierre Cronvall and Jens Nilsson walk explain how the project went.

What was the impact for pilots?

Braathens didn’t have to invest heavily in training on the solution. Thanks to its intuitive design and tech savvy crew they were able to roll the solution out quickly, going live within 3 months of starting the AvioBook project.

All it took was a company wide memo and short teams meeting and the crew were off in the air with AvioBook Flight.

And for flight operations?

Since operations started, Braathens has had full access to all the necessary data to ensure that they are operating efficiently. For example, Bromma being an urban airport surrounded by the islands and suburbs of Stockholm there are strict noise restrictions on the fleet. Braathens is able to respect these by carefully monitoring the take off weight of the aircraft, easily accessible thanks to the AvioBook Base.

Similarly as required by the European Union and as an airline conscious of its environmental impact, reporting greenhouse emissions is vital. Since this is calculated on the fuel consumption it is important to have the data easily at hand. With the MySQL data provided by AvioBook, mining that information to create an accurate image of emissions is easy.

When it comes to the short time between final check in and take off, Mass and Balance calculations need to be done quickly. With AvioBook’s Weight and Balance module this is not only integrated with the EFB but with it’s manual version, pilots have full control over what’s happening on their aircraft and are able to calculate the distribution factoring in the latest data and the specific requirements of the aircraft.
